Mohicans

Hudson River nation

Mohicans refers to a Native American people originally inhabiting the Hudson River valley in what is now New York.

The Mohicans (also spelled Mahicans) were distinct from the Mohegans of Connecticut, though the names are often confused.

James Fenimore Cooper's novel *The Last of the Mohicans* (1826) romanticized and popularized the name, though it conflated the two peoples.

In British slang, a mohican is a hairstyle with the sides shaved and a central strip standing upright—Americans call this a mohawk.
