Mobutu
Zaire's longtime strongman
Mobutu Sese Seko was the dictator of Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) from 1965 to 1997.
His regime became synonymous with kleptocracy—he amassed billions while his country deteriorated.
The name sometimes appears as shorthand for corrupt African strongman rule or Cold War-era dictatorships propped up by Western powers: another Mobutu in the making.
