MiniDiscs

Portable optical media

MiniDiscs are a digital optical disc format introduced by Sony in 1992, smaller than CDs and housed in a protective cartridge.

They allowed recording and re-recording, making them popular for portable music players and field recording before MP3 players and flash memory made them obsolete: I still have boxes of MiniDiscs from college.

The format retained a cult following among audio enthusiasts.
