Makkah

Holiest Islamic site

Makkah is the Arabic spelling of Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, located in western Saudi Arabia.

It is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and home to the Kaaba, toward which Muslims pray.

Non-Muslims are forbidden from entering the city.

The spelling Makkah appears in official Saudi contexts and increasingly in English texts seeking closer alignment with Arabic: the Makkah Royal Clock Tower. (Mecca is the traditional English spelling.)
