Madinah

Prophet's burial city

Madinah is an alternative transliteration of Medina, the city in western Saudi Arabia that is Islam's second holiest site after Mecca.

The Prophet Muhammad fled there from Mecca in 622 CE—an event called the Hijra that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar—and is buried there.

The spelling Madinah more closely reflects Arabic pronunciation.
