international zone
Neutral diplomatic territory
An international zone is an area under shared governance by multiple nations or exempt from the jurisdiction of the country surrounding it.
These zones exist at airports and seaports, where travelers pass through without formally entering the host country: She waited in the international zone during her layover.
Historically, entire cities or regions were designated international zones—Tangier operated under international administration for decades.
The term also appears in conflict contexts, where a zone may be placed under multinational control to prevent territorial disputes.
