MIME

MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, a standard that defines how non-text content like images, audio, and attachments are formatted for transmission over the internet.

You encounter it in MIME types that tell browsers how to handle files: text/html, image/jpeg, application/pdf.

Though the acronym is properly capitalized, the term often appears lowercase in casual technical writing. (Lowercase mime is the silent performer.)
