Kon-Tiki
Peru-to-Polynesia craft
Kon-Tiki was a balsa wood raft used by Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl in 1947 to sail from Peru to Polynesia, demonstrating that ancient South Americans could have settled the Pacific islands.
The name comes from an Incan sun god.
The voyage and subsequent book and documentary made Kon-Tiki synonymous with daring, low-tech expeditions: a Kon-Tiki approach to the problem.
