Japanese Empire
Rising sun nation
The Japanese Empire was Japan under imperial rule, particularly the expansionist state from the late 19th century through World War II.
At its height in the early 1940s, it controlled Korea, Manchuria, Taiwan, and much of Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
The empire ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, though the imperial institution survived in ceremonial form.
The Japanese Empire's rapid modernization surprised Western powers.
