Icehouse

"Electric Blue" band

An icehouse is a building for storing ice, traditionally cut from frozen lakes and rivers in winter to preserve food through warmer months.

Before mechanical refrigeration, icehouses were essential infrastructure—insulated structures, often partially underground, where blocks of ice could last well into summer.

The term also names commercial establishments that sold ice, and in some regions, bars or convenience stores that sell beer: We stopped at the icehouse for a six-pack.
