slide guitar
Blues string gliding
Slide guitar is a technique in which a smooth, hard object—typically a glass or metal tube worn on the finger—is pressed against the strings instead of fretting them normally.
The slide glides along the strings to produce a smooth, gliding sound with continuous pitch changes.
The technique is central to blues, country, and Hawaiian music: The song opens with a mournful slide guitar.
Also called bottleneck guitar, from the practice of using a broken bottle neck as a slide.
