Hottentot
Southern African people
Hottentot is an old term for the Khoikhoi people of southern Africa, now considered offensive.
European colonizers applied the name, which may have mocked the click sounds in Khoikhoi languages.
The word appears in older texts and place names but has been largely replaced by Khoikhoi in contemporary usage.
The Hottentot Venus was exhibited as a curiosity in 19th-century Europe.
