Gregg shorthand
Symbol-based transcription method
Gregg shorthand is a system of rapid handwriting using curved strokes and loops to represent sounds rather than letters.
Developed in the 1880s, it became the dominant shorthand method in American business and journalism through most of the twentieth century: She took the deposition in Gregg shorthand.
Secretaries and court reporters once learned it as an essential skill, though it has largely been displaced by audio recording and typing.
