shorthands

Compressed writing systems

Shorthands are abbreviated ways of writing or expressing something.

The term covers formal stenographic systems used by court reporters and secretaries, but more often refers to any condensed notation or quick way of referring to complex ideas: Mathematical symbols are shorthands for operations, "woke" became shorthand for a certain political sensibility.

The plural emphasizes multiple systems or conventions rather than the practice generally.
