German division

Teutonic military formation

A German division is a major military unit of the German armed forces, historically comprising 10,000 to 20,000 soldiers organized into regiments and battalions.

The term appears frequently in World War II histories: The German division broke through Allied lines at dawn.

In a different sense, German division refers to the Cold War partition of Germany into East and West from 1949 to 1990: The Berlin Wall was the starkest symbol of German division.
