nation state
People's political territory
A nation state is a political entity where the boundaries of a country align with a distinct national identity—a people sharing common language, culture, or ethnicity.
The concept emerged in modern Europe and became the dominant model of political organization: France is often cited as the prototypical nation state.
In practice, few states are ethnically homogeneous, making the ideal more aspiration than reality.
The term often appears hyphenated or as one word: nation-state, nationstate.
