General Secretary

Top party official

General Secretary is the title for the chief administrative officer of certain organizations, particularly political parties and international bodies.

In communist states, the General Secretary of the ruling party—such as the Communist Party of the Soviet Union or the Chinese Communist Party—typically holds supreme power: Stalin ruled as General Secretary for nearly thirty years.

The title also applies to heads of organizations like the United Nations, though Secretary-General is preferred there.
