Freedom Rides
Interstate bus protests
Freedom Rides were bus trips through the American South in 1961 organized by civil rights activists to challenge segregation in interstate travel facilities.
Black and white riders together violated local segregation laws at bus terminals, facing violent attacks from white mobs in Alabama and elsewhere.
The Freedom Rides drew national attention and ultimately pressured federal enforcement of desegregation rulings.
The Freedom Rides showed that nonviolent direct action could force the federal government's hand.
