Fifth Monarchists
Cromwell-era apocalyptic sect
Fifth Monarchists were radical English Protestants in the mid-seventeenth century who believed Christ's return was imminent and would establish a fifth monarchy following the four ancient empires described in the Book of Daniel.
They sought to prepare England for this kingdom through political action and, after the Restoration, armed rebellion.
The movement faded after failed uprisings in 1661.
