federations
Joined sovereign states
Federations are unions of states or organizations that retain some autonomy while submitting to a central authority.
Countries like the United States, Germany, and Australia are federations—their component states have their own governments but yield certain powers to the national level.
The term extends to any alliance of groups under shared governance: a federation of labor unions, the international chess federation.
