Dante's Inferno

Poetic underworld journey

Dante's Inferno is the first part of the *Divine Comedy*, a 14th-century Italian poem depicting the author's imagined journey through Hell's nine descending circles, each punishing sinners according to their sins.

The phrase often refers broadly to any hellish scenario of suffering or chaos: The warehouse fire was a scene from Dante's Inferno.

Dante's Inferno sometimes names the concept of Hell itself.
