D-dimer

Degraded fibrin indicator

D-dimer is a protein fragment produced when blood clots break down in the body.

Elevated D-dimer levels in blood tests suggest recent or ongoing clot formation, making it a diagnostic marker for conditions like deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and disseminated intravascular coagulation: Her D-dimer came back high, so they ordered a CT scan.

A normal result helps rule out clotting disorders, though elevated levels can also occur with infection, surgery, or pregnancy.
