Codex

Titled ancient volume

A codex is an ancient manuscript in book form—pages bound together along one edge rather than rolled into a scroll.

The format, which replaced scrolls in late antiquity, is the ancestor of the modern book.

Codex also refers to authoritative collections of laws or pharmaceutical standards: the Napoleonic code descends from Roman codices, the United States Pharmacopeia was once called a codex.

Plural: codices or codexes.
