Bolívar

Venezuelan independence leader

Bolívar most often refers to Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), the Venezuelan military leader who liberated much of South America from Spanish rule.

His name marks the continent: Bolivia is named for him, and bolívar is the currency of Venezuela.

Countless streets, plazas, and institutions across Latin America bear his name.

The statue of Bolívar stands in the main square.
