Big Bad Wolf

Huffing, puffing menace

The Big Bad Wolf is a villainous character from fairy tales, particularly "The Three Little Pigs" and "Little Red Riding Hood," where he threatens to huff and puff and blow houses down or disguises himself to devour grandmothers.

The phrase has become shorthand for any menacing figure or looming threat: The IRS is the big bad wolf of tax season.

Often used with ironic exaggeration for things less fearsome than they're made out to be.
