stranger danger

Unknown person peril

Stranger danger is the idea, taught to children, that unfamiliar adults may pose a threat and should be approached with caution.

The phrase emerged from child safety campaigns warning kids not to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from people they don't know: They drilled stranger danger into us in elementary school.

Critics note that most child abuse comes from known adults, not strangers.
