Auger

French physicist's surname

An auger is a tool with a helical shaft for boring holes or moving material.

Hand augers drill into wood or ice; larger mechanical augers move grain, dig post holes, or clear snow.

The spiral design pulls material up and out as it rotates: We used an auger to drill through the frozen lake.

Not to be confused with augur, meaning to predict.
