Archangel is a port city in northwestern Russia, on the White Sea near the Arctic Circle.
Founded in the sixteenth century, it served as Russia's chief seaport before St.
Petersburg was built.
The city takes its name from the Archangel Michael Monastery.
Allied forces occupied Archangel during the Russian Civil War. (Lowercase archangel is a chief angel.)
