Caliban

Monstrous island slave

Caliban is a character in Shakespeare's *The Tempest*—a savage, deformed slave who inhabits the island where Prospero is stranded.

The name has become a byword for brutishness, primitiveness, or resentful subjugation: He played Caliban to her Prospero, doing her bidding while seething with contempt.

Postcolonial readings have recast Caliban as a symbol of the colonized, his "monstrousness" reflecting the colonizer's gaze.
