Downloadable mobile program
App is short for application—specifically, a software program designed to perform a particular function.
Though the word existed before smartphones, mobile devices made it ubiquitous: I downloaded an app for tracking my runs.
Apps range from games and social media to banking and productivity tools.
The word now applies to software on any device: a desktop app, a web app.
