killer apps
System-selling programs
Killer apps—short for killer applications—are software programs so compelling they drive adoption of the hardware or platform they run on.
VisiCalc sold Apple IIs; web browsers made people buy modems.
The term extends beyond software to any breakthrough feature that makes a larger system indispensable: Email was the killer app of the early internet.
