zocalo

Town center courtyard

A zocalo is the main public square in a Mexican town or city, typically featuring a central plaza surrounded by government buildings, churches, and shops.

The term comes from the unfinished pedestal that once stood in Mexico City's central square.

We met at the zocalo to watch the evening promenade.
