storm cell
Isolated storm unit
A storm cell is a discrete, self-contained unit of convective activity within a larger weather system—essentially an individual thunderstorm engine with its own updrafts and downdrafts.
Meteorologists track storm cells to predict severe weather; a single storm system may contain multiple cells.
The storm cell is moving northeast at 30 miles per hour.
Supercells are particularly intense storm cells capable of producing tornadoes.
