welting

Raised seam edging

Welting is the process of attaching a welt—a strip of material sewn between two pieces, typically in shoemaking or upholstery.

In shoes, welting secures the upper to the sole; in furniture, it creates a decorative raised edge along seams: The armchair's welting was fraying.

Welting also refers to the material itself: She bought extra welting for the cushion covers.
