taking over
Seizing the reins
Taking over is assuming control of something from someone else.
A new CEO takes over the company; one country takes over another by force; a feeling can take over when it dominates your state of mind: Panic took over and I couldn't think straight.
The noun takeover describes such a transfer, especially in business: a hostile takeover.
