waterdogs

Mudpuppies and relatives

Waterdogs are aquatic salamanders, especially the mudpuppy and related species that retain their feathery external gills throughout life.

The term also applies to any person comfortable in water—a strong swimmer, someone who works on boats, or a child who won't leave the pool: My nephew's a real waterdog; he'd stay in the lake all day if we let him.
