water protectors
Sacred land defenders
Water protectors are activists who defend water sources from pollution, pipeline construction, or other threats—particularly Indigenous peoples asserting treaty rights and environmental stewardship.
The term gained prominence during the 2016 Standing Rock protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, where participants rejected "protestor" as too narrow: We are not protestors, we are water protectors.
The phrase frames opposition to development as sacred duty rather than mere dissent.
