corn snake

Docile orange serpent

A corn snake is a nonvenomous North American snake, orange or reddish-brown with darker blotches, commonly kept as a pet.

The name comes from the checkered pattern on its belly resembling kernels of maize corn.

Corn snakes are docile, easy to care for, and popular with beginning reptile keepers: My daughter wants a corn snake for her birthday.
