wapitis
Large antlered cervids
Wapitis is the plural of wapiti, a large North American deer also called an elk.
The word comes from Shawnee and Cree languages.
Wapiti is the more precise term—elk can cause confusion since it refers to a different animal (the moose) in Europe: The herd of wapitis grazed in the meadow.
