walking staff
Traveler's wooden support
A walking staff is a tall stick used for support and balance while walking, especially over rough terrain.
Longer than a cane and typically reaching shoulder height or above, walking staffs are associated with hiking, pilgrimage, and pastoral imagery: The shepherd leaned on his walking staff as he surveyed the flock.
Also called a walking stick, though that term also refers to the insect.
