volta

Repeat bracket marking

Volta is a turn or shift, most commonly encountered in poetry.

In a sonnet, the volta marks where the argument pivots—typically between the octave and sestet, or before the final couplet: The volta transforms the poem's longing into acceptance.

In Italian, volta simply means "turn," which is why it also names a lively Renaissance dance featuring leaps and turns.
