visual imagery
Pictures in mind
Visual imagery is the use of descriptive language to create mental pictures.
In literature and rhetoric, it appeals to the sense of sight: The author's visual imagery of the crumbling mansion made readers see every crack and shadow.
The term also refers to mental pictures themselves—the images that form in the mind when reading, remembering, or imagining: Athletes use visual imagery to rehearse their performances.
