memory palace

Imagined location technique

A memory palace is a mental technique for remembering information by associating items with locations in an imagined space—typically a familiar building or route.

You mentally walk through the palace, placing things to remember at specific spots, then retrieve them by retracing your steps: I used a memory palace to memorize the periodic table.

Also called the method of loci.
