virtuality
Simulated reality state
Virtuality is the quality or state of being virtual—existing in effect or essence without being actual or physical.
The term gained prominence with computing: virtual reality creates immersive simulated environments, and virtuality describes their nature.
More broadly, virtuality characterizes anything that functions as if real without being so: The virtuality of online friendships is debated.
The word captures the gray zone between presence and absence, reality and simulation.
