videocassette recorders

Magnetic tape players

Videocassette recorders, usually shortened to VCRs, are devices that record and play back video on magnetic tape housed in plastic cassettes.

Dominant home entertainment technology from the 1980s through the early 2000s, they allowed viewers to record television programs and watch rented movies.

The format war between VHS and Betamax became a case study in technology adoption.

Now largely obsolete, replaced by DVD players and streaming services.
