velvet ant

Wingless female wasp

A velvet ant is a wasp, not an ant—the wingless females resemble large, fuzzy ants covered in dense hair, often brilliantly colored in red, orange, or white.

They're known for an extremely painful sting, earning some species the nickname "cow killer." Males have wings and look more conventionally wasp-like.
