bald-faced hornet
Black-and-white wasp
A bald-faced hornet is a large North American wasp, black with distinctive white markings on its face and body.
Despite the name, it's technically a yellowjacket rather than a true hornet.
These insects build large, enclosed paper nests in trees and are notoriously aggressive when defending them: We found a bald-faced hornet nest the hard way.
