parasitoid
Lethal developmental tenant
A parasitoid is an organism—typically an insect—that develops inside or on a host, eventually killing it.
Unlike true parasites, which keep their hosts alive, parasitoids are lethal by design: the larva consumes the host from within, then emerges as an adult.
Parasitoid wasps are the classic example, laying eggs inside caterpillars or other insects.
The term also functions as an adjective: parasitoid behavior, parasitoid species.
