woolly bear caterpillar
Banded fuzzy crawler
A woolly bear caterpillar is the fuzzy, bristly larva of certain tiger moths, particularly the Isabella tiger moth common in North America.
Its distinctive bands of black and reddish-brown have inspired folk beliefs that their width predicts winter severity—wider brown bands supposedly mean milder weather.
The caterpillars curl into tight balls when disturbed.
