vassalize

Reduce to dependency

To vassalize is to reduce a state or people to vassal status—making them subordinate and dependent on a more powerful entity.

The term comes from the feudal relationship where a vassal owed allegiance to a lord in exchange for protection.

In modern use, it describes domination that falls short of outright conquest: The treaty effectively vassalized the smaller nation.

A country may be vassalized through economic pressure, military threat, or political manipulation.
